TIME IS MELTING
The form that I have designed is a clock that we use at all the times. For my object, I have created with using plaster, by mixing up certain amount of water and plaster powder. At first, I gathered all my ideas in a piece of paper, to create an object. Surprisingly, in the beginning, I chose to create a flower. However while I was carving the object from the poster, I decided to change my topic, more interesting and came up with an idea of the clock. I was inspired from one of my favorite art pieces, called “Alarm Clock” by Marie Sester. Since clock is a kind of an object that people are familiar with and something that is essential, I thought that it would be interesting if I made my own piece of an alarm clock that carries a different message into it. When I finished forming the round-oval shaped circle with a hole in the middle, I have created another two round balls from the poster form by using variety of tools, such as knives and small saws. In order to attach two circles from the big oval-circle shape, I used wires to attach them. I have realized that using wires was a great idea because even if it didn’t strongly hold the forms, plaster facilitated the forms together. Before pouring the plaster down, I covered the plaster cotton cloth over the form in order to create weight and to make the forms to unite. Then I have added water into plaster powder by balancing the each amount. Therefore, I mixed thoroughly with my fingers and poured the plaster into my object carefully, by creating depth. When I was well-satisfied, I used variety of carving tools, in order to create texture and formulate the shape into the object. Interestingly, I have decided to create a rough texture for the ears of the clock. Then I smoothed out the surface of the big oval-circle, because I was going to paint the letters of the clock. After it was carved completely, then I used paint and color-spray to decorate the form.
For my object, the major principles of design that it is applied are repetition, contrast, emphasis and unity. After pouring the mixture of plaster into the form, the way I carved by forming the texture made my form outstanding and created emphasis and contrast. Two ears of the clock, which had rough texture shows the contrast from the center oval-circle shape, since its texture is smooth. Also, the arrow in the middle of the clock formulates the emphasis; since it is colored in one dominate color, black. Comparing the form of the shape and two different styles of texture create outstanding of emphasis. When the color was applied to the form, the lines and the shapes of the numbers were drawn on the plaster area, repetitively. In order to maintain the rhythm, the silver color of the spray was added to the two ears of the clock. In addition, my favorite and most important area that portrays the message is the black water dripping down from the clock. It strongly stands out and gives the message that time is melting. From viewing my final outcome, I am very well-satisfied, and the final piece came out to be what I wanted to be. If I had to do foam and plaster process, to create another piece, I would have surly created anything since I’m familiar with the steps. For an example, I would choose object or anything that is significant and have an interesting form to apply the elements and the principles of design.
